My name is Rahul Gupta. I am an engineer by profession with mechanical engineering as my major. After graduating, and keeping my interest in the technology sector going, I started working for Maruti Suzuki, the largest passenger car maker in India. I worked there for 5 years in the production department. During those years, I held many different positions in my department, having responsibilities for quality, production and new models . However, I wanted to move from an all -technical role to a more managerial role and manage operations on the whole instead of handling individual sections. But I believed that I lacked the necessary skills required to hold such a position in a company. I needed a layer of business skills on top of my technical and analytical skills, so I decided to go for an MBA. I believe this programme will give me exposure to multi-domain business knowledge, enhance my soft skills and give me access to the vast experience and knowledge that my peers will bring with them.
I am almost 6 weeks into the programme and already feel that going for MBA at HKU was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I had an extraordinary experience in China, where not only did I learn basic Mandarin, which is essential for someone looking to work in this region, but also learned about Chinese culture. The various company talks and company visits that were organised gave a good insight into how companies function in China and how it is different from other parts of the world. Moreover, since almost the entire MBA batch was living together in the same hotel and going on cultural visits together, we could spend time with each other and develop a strong bond and sense of camaraderie which will be very important as we go ahead with our studies in Hong Kong and later in the partnership schools.
The experience so far has been great fun yet enriching at the same time and I very keenly look forward to the next 10 months of this programme.
