From Beijing to Hong Kong: A Strategic Career Move

When Fei He decided to leave Beijing and come to Hong Kong to pursue a Full-Time MBA at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), he had already built a solid career in the capital markets — from managing IPO preparation and corporate finance to taking on front-office investment roles at Chinese venture capital firms.

This experience gave him both the technical expertise and industry perspective to take the next strategic step in his career. In 2025, that step came when he transitioned into a Hong Kong based‑ global venture capital fund, where he now serves as Vice President at NextGen Partners, focusing on global AI investments.

Reflecting on this journey, Fei emphasises that his transformation was the result of both strategic foresight and decisive action. “It’s important to understand where your strengths lie and to act on them,” he says. “Clarity of direction and initiative make all the difference.”

“The HKU Full-time MBA further accelerated my transition into a well‑established global venture fund and into global AI investment by introducing me to the internship opportunity at NextGen Partners, which subsequently developed into my current full‑time position,” Fei says. “Through targeted career‑development guidance, mentorship from a senior private equity executive, and close collaboration with classmates from complementary backgrounds, I gained not only practical experience but also a strong professional network — a foundation that continues to advance my career today.”

Bridging Global Experience and Local Opportunity

Before joining the HKU MBA, Fei He had already lived and worked in seven countries and regions, gaining a truly global perspective. He led venture capital projects, managed cross-border acceleration initiatives, and drove international business development, all of which have build a professional profile that balances breadth and depth.

Hong Kong had been part of his journey years earlier, and when the time came to reassess his career path, he was drawn back by the city’s strategic position — a global financial centre linking East and West. His goal was clear: return to Hong Kong, join a global fund, and build a sustainable local network. This clear vision is what motivates him to join the HKU MBA.

“For me, the MBA serves as a bridge — linking classroom learning with real‑world practice, and connecting people with opportunities,” says Fei. “HKU’s distinctive location and extensive alumni network were key factors that I valued most.”

Leveraging the HKU MBA Platform

From the start of the MBA programme, Fei was deliberate about maximising the platform’s potential. He fully leveraged the supports offered by the HKU MBA Career Development and Training (CDT) Team, participating in one-on-one consultations to refine his personal positioning matching, clarify his professional goals, and identify his competitive strengths.

Meanwhile, he worked methodically to expand his alumni network, building connections with graduates who shared similar interests, as well as seeking introductions through mentors and professional advisors.

These relationships soon translated into opportunity. Alumni and classmates who had financial advisory or entrepreneurial experience later became his connectors to potential deals and investment prospects.

Mentorship and Professional Guidance

One of the key highlights of Fei’s MBA experience was the HKU MBA Mentor Programme.

“I’m truly grateful for the mentor assigned to me through the HKU MBA,” he notes. “She’s a seasoned Managing Director at a leading global private equity firm in Hong Kong, possessing extensive knowledge of the local PE &VC ecosystem and exceptionally strong networks. Through her introductions, I was able to meet numerous industry practitioners and gain access to valuable insights and resources. Over time, our relationship has evolved, and she has become not only as a mentor but also a genuine friend and a trusted advisor in both my professional and personal life.”

These relationships, combined with the structured support from the HKU MBA CDT Team, created a powerful springboard for his next career move. Through an internship opportunity recommended by the programme, Fei joined his current firm and soon transitioned to a full‑time Vice President role.

From Learning to Leadership

Today, Fei’s work bridges investment strategy and technological innovation, evaluating how artificial intelligence is reshaping industries and value chains around the world.

“The value of an MBA is not confined to lectures or textbooks,” he says. “It lies in how effectively you leverage the people, resources, and opportunities the programme provides, and in how consistently you translate those experiences into tangible progress toward your goals.”

Practical Lessons from the MBA journey

Reflecting on his MBA experience, Fei distils a simple yet powerful takeaway: career transformation is rarely accidental. It’s engineered through clarity of purpose and consistent, deliberate effort.

“Begin with a clear goal,” he says. “Then take each step with intention and perseverance. Every deliberate step lays the groundwork for the next.”

“Many friends considering an MBA ask me, ‘How’s the Hong Kong job market? Are there enough opportunities?’ My answer is simple: opportunities are always there — it depends on how you seize them. To achieve your goals, you can’t just watch and wait for perfect market conditions. Whether the market is strong or weak, you must have your own strategy. If you leverage the resources around you and take the initiative, you’ll find the path forward.”

Fei’s Message To Entrepreneurs and Investors in AI

Driven by a strong sense of purpose, Fei is eager to give back to the HKU MBA community and to society at large, empowering peers and alumni who are shaping their paths in the fast‑moving world of AI entrepreneurship.

“If you are an entrepreneur,” he advises, “I would welcome the opportunity to connect, regardless of whether your product is already mature. Founders, particularly those with technical backgrounds, often have deeper and sharper insights into emerging technologies and their real‑world applications than investors.  Speaking with you enables me to learn from your experience and gain a deeper understanding of your sector. At the same time, I hope we can explore how to build sustainable business models and robust capital roadmaps, from both commercial and strategic perspectives.

If you are an investor, I welcome similar exchanges. Sharing insights and engaging in thoughtful discussions help both of us refine our understanding. In an industry that moves as rapidly as this, connecting with like‑minded individuals to think, discuss, and challenge one another is valuable in itself.”
