Full-time MBA

Class of 2018

I was working in finance in Mexico City before I decided to take the leap and study an MBA at Hong Kong University. I have always been a person that likes to push myself outside of my comfort zone, but felt that the many universities I looked at in the US and Europe wouldn’t have pushed me. Instead, I looked toward Asia. I saw that Hong Kong University had been ranked number one in Asia for nine consecutive years by the Economist, from 2010 to 2018. This prompted my decision to study here and I could not have made a better decision!

The MBA gave my career a twist that was unimaginable to me. Within the finance sector, I had specifically been in the sell side of the market, so I definitely think that the MBA defined my path toward my job having a larger impact on people’s lives. Not only did it have a hugely positive impact on my career, but I also met some incredible people. My classmates made it the memorable journey that it was. We really came together as a close group after spending a month in Beijing where we took part in team building activities and sightseeing, as well as learning mandarin. When we moved to Hong Kong our bond continued to grow. Not only were we learning a lot from the courses, but we also shared festivities from such a united and diverse class. Finally, we went to different countries to finish our MBA adventure. I went to London, where I had the opportunity to meet even more inspiring people and grow my network of business contacts across many sectors.

I will be forever grateful for my MBA experience and everyone I met along the way. Without it, I don’t believe I would have my current job at DiDi – the Chinese ride-hailing firm. Since joining DiDi 3 months after it launched in Mexico I have worked to develop strategies offering features such as an emergency alert button for passengers and drivers. By the end of 2018, DiDi had become the most popular travel app in both Mexico’s Apple and Google App Store. Studying at HKU gave me unparalleled knowledge of and access to the Asian market and encouraged me to switch career tracks in order to do something I had never considered before. The school was very supportive. They were a mentor to me, helping me decide whether working at DiDi was aligned with my career goals. Not only this, but HKU helped me redefine my expectations of what success means.
