Pre-MBA Employer, Industry and Job Title/Function:
I began my career journey at Starbucks China, where I worked as a digital product specialist. After that, I went to McKinsey, where I worked as a Consultant. In this role, I collaborated with diverse clients to tackle complex business challenges and implement effective solutions. After my time at McKinsey, I joined Citibank as a Product Manager of Strategy and Client Growth, where I focused on developing innovative strategies to enhance client engagement and drive growth.

About Me:
An ambitious adventurer who always stretches myself for greater self-achievement and social impact.

My Biggest Career Accomplishment:
During my time at McKinsey as a consultant in the consumer sector, I led a digital solutions initiative for a major home appliance company. Despite a tight deadline, I managed to present my deliverables to the client well ahead of schedule. However, I received feedback indicating that the solution needed adjustments, as it was too sophisticated for its primary users—small-town store owners.

After realising the gap between customer needs and the actual product offering, I took the initiative to conduct additional interviews with store owners and consumers to clarify their requirements. Working closely with the client, we integrated local insights with McKinsey’s broader perspective. The final solution was simple, accessible, and tailored for everyday use by store managers

Additionally, we implemented a training programme to enhance the store managers’ skills beyond the immediate solution. As a result, store revenues increased by 60% to 90%, and the number of stores grew from 2 to 20 nationwide within three months. This project taught me that true leadership isn’t about demonstrating individual skills, but about empowering others and fostering a collective drive towards lasting success.

Aspiration for Pursuing an MBA:
Over the past few years, I have worked for different industries and roles in consumer business. I am attuned to the evolving business models emerging from demographic shifts and technological advancements. My background has strengthened my cross-functional skills in the consumer sector, and I aim to support the growth of innovative businesses that contribute to societal progress.

Pursuing an MBA is a strategic decision to deepen my understanding of business and finance.I am particularly drawn to the HKU MBA programme for the cutting-edge curriculum which includes courses like Corporate Finance, Managing Digital Innovation, and New Venture Development. These courses will enhance my financial knowledge and enable me to integrate my diverse experiences with modern business strategies.

I am eager to connect with fellow entrepreneurs in the MBA programme to broaden my network. From the beginning of the HKU MBA, I would actively seek career opportunities in financial institutions, consumer startups, or internal business incubation to enhance my career trajectory.

Important Factors When Choosing an MBA Programme:
The most important factors for me when choosing an MBA program are people, location, and international recognition. I believe that regardless of our goals, it is the people and community that play a critical role in achieving success.

In terms of location, working in the finance industry makes it essential for me to be in a financial centre, where access to resources and networking opportunities is crucial for my career development.

Finally, international recognition serves as an intuitive indicator of the quality of the school and its programmes.

Why HKU MBA:

I also considered programmes in the UK, U.S., and Singapore. My interview with the HKU MBA admissions team was the third I attended. The interviewer showed genuine interest and care for the applicants, underscoring that the HKU MBA is not only unique in its curriculum but also fosters a community that cares for its members. It was a memorable experience that reinforced my positive impression of the programme.

I have also heard from alumni about several key offerings:

  • CERDARS – a supportive community that assists with various aspects of school life, including accommodation recommendations, the onboarding process, and healthcare.
  • CDT Team – a resourceful group that provides career development support through one-on-one career talks, CV revisions, LinkedIn training, and access to executive coaches for industry insights and mentorship.
  • Online Tools and Facilities

Post-MBA Expectation:

  • Switch working location to HK
  • Integrate the insights and skills I’ve gained from my experiences across different industries.
  • Make life-long friendships and connections.

Advice for Prospective Candidates:
My advice for prospective candidates is to think of themselves as a product to be marketed. Identify your unique selling points and consider how you would promote yourself effectively. Conduct a thorough self-assessment and continually challenge yourself on the “why” behind your motivations. This preparation will not only enhance your essays and interviews but will also help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, regardless of the outcome.
