About Me: An entrepreneurial and analytical problem solver with technical expertise, committed to delivering impactful strategic solutions in consulting.

My Biggest Career Accomplishment

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I launched and built a startup focused on sourcing and distributing personal protective equipment to meet urgent market demands. This venture arose from the critical need for reliable medical-grade protective equipment during a global crisis. I worked directly with various suppliers in China to procure high-quality PPE, negotiated favourable purchase contracts, and established strong relationships to ensure a consistent and cost-effective supply chain.

I coordinated end-to-end logistics, overseeing the transportation of goods from manufacturers to clients, selecting the best carriers while optimising distribution networks. To enhance operational efficiency, I closely managed inventory levels to ensure we could meet client demands without delays. One of my most significant achievements during this time was supplying over 10 million masks and gowns to Canada’s largest senior nursing care home, making a meaningful contribution to public health and safety.

Aspirations for Pursuing an MBA

I was motivated to pursue an MBA to bridge the gap between my technical and entrepreneurial experience and the strategic and analytical expertise needed for impactful leadership. Throughout my career, I have undertaken diverse roles in technology, product development, and entrepreneurship, including launching a startup to distribute PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic and leading an e-commerce division for a drone technology company. While these experiences honed my problem-solving, innovation, and leadership skills, I recognised the need for a deeper understanding of complex business strategies, global market dynamics, and management frameworks to drive larger-scale solutions.

An MBA provides the platform to enhance my strategic thinking, develop a comprehensive business acumen, and collaborate with peers from diverse backgrounds. It offers me the opportunity to refine my leadership capabilities, learn from industry experts, and build a global network—key elements for transitioning into consulting, where I can apply my entrepreneurial mindset and analytical skills to solve complex business problems and create meaningful impact.

Why HKU MBA

When choosing an MBA programme, one of the most important factors for me was finding a programme with a strong global perspective and regional presence. I wanted a programme that offered a comprehensive understanding of both Western and Eastern business practices, as my career has spanned international markets. Studying in a region like Asia, with its dynamic and rapidly growing economy, was essential for gaining valuable insights into global market trends and strategic business approaches that could be applied across various industries.

Another significant factor was the opportunity to engage with a diverse and experienced peer network. I valued being part of a programme where I could collaborate with individuals from various industries and backgrounds. This exposure would allow me to learn from others’ experiences, broaden my perspectives, and build a robust professional network that could support my career growth and open doors to new opportunities.

I also placed great importance on strong industry connections and career support. I wanted an MBA programme that would offer substantial access to industry leaders, mentorships, and a dedicated career services team. These elements were crucial to ensuring a smooth transition into consulting, providing opportunities to gain real-world insights, and fostering relationships that would be beneficial for my long-term career aspirations.

Lastly, location and proximity were key factors for me. HKU’s location offered a strategic advantage, being more accessible and integrated with the vibrant business and cultural life of Hong Kong. This allowed for easier networking opportunities, better access to industry leaders, and a more seamless connection to professional engagements within the city.

My expectations after completing the MBA

After completing the MBA, I expect to break into consulting to tackle more abstract and complex business problems. I am drawn to the strategic and multifaceted nature of consulting, where I can apply my diverse background in entrepreneurship, product development, and technical expertise to deliver tailored solutions for clients. I look forward to joining a leading consulting firm that will provide opportunities to work on challenging projects, collaborate with diverse teams, and deepen my understanding of various industries.

My goal is to refine my strategic thinking and analytical capabilities to address high-level business challenges, develop innovative strategies, and help clients navigate complex market dynamics. Additionally, I anticipate expanding my professional network and building relationships with industry leaders and peers, which will be crucial for future growth. The MBA will equip me with the knowledge and leadership skills necessary to excel in consulting and position me for long-term career progression into senior roles, where I can continue to make a meaningful impact.

Advice for Prospective Candidates

For prospective MBA candidates, my advice is to first take the time to deeply understand your long-term career goals and assess whether an MBA is the right step to help you achieve them. Consider how an MBA programme’s curriculum, resources, and network align with your vision and whether it will bridge the gap between your current capabilities and future aspirations. Reflect on what you want to accomplish and how the skills and knowledge gained through an MBA will support that journey.
