Entrepreneurial Incubation Lab

Entrepreneurial Incubation Lab

At HKU MBA, we believe that technology start-ups are a key element driving the internet economy, enabling Industry 4.0. Technology firms are reshaping business models across industries and future business leaders will need to be entrepreneurial to drive their organisation’s business growth. Nowhere is this more evident than in the Greater Bay Area, with Hong Kong and Shenzhen as the leading global innovation and start-up hubs.

To empower our students to build their entrepreneurial skills, the HKU MBA programme is partnering with Cyberport Academy, part of Hong Kong’s largest start-up incubation hub, in conducting the Entrepreneurial Innovation Lab course. This course will enable students to experience the journey of tech start-ups from business concepts, team dynamics, idea development and validation through entrepreneurial incubation training.

Students will get a unique opportunity to learn from award-winning start-ups about their secret sauce of minimal viable product developments, and the challenges often encountered by start-ups. At the end of the course, students shall develop and pitch their business ideas, and have the opportunity to be shortlisted for an interview for the Cyberport Creative Micro Fund (‘CCMF’) or Cyberport Incubation Programme (‘CIP’) to realise their dreams.

The course is driven by the objectives of building up an entrepreneurial mentality & skills that leverage entrepreneurial incubation training, cultivating the capabilities of start-up founders for identification of market opportunities & the development of sustainable business models and engaging in practical workshops to develop investor decks and present start-up pitches.

The course will be spread over three main stages of
Incubation, Business Concept, and Angel Investing.

Incubation

It is critical for entrepreneurs to learn the process of incubating an idea and developing it from scratch. In the incubation stage, students will learn about idea development and team formation. They will get to validate their ideas and understand the role played by incubation platforms in the tech startup ecosystem.

Business Concept

For a startup to successfully scale-up, the business concept must be well thought out and developed. In this stage, students will learn about key technology trends and how they can incorporate them into their business concepts. Through interaction with mentors, they will be able to finalise their business plan and prepare their investor decks for the startup pitch.

The course will end with a start-up mixer and a final pitch to real-world investors and start-up founders.
