Aspirations for Career Transition
My academic journey began in the UK, where I completed my undergraduate studies in biomedical science in London. I then specialised in clinical embryology, a field closely related to fertility and in vitro fertilisation, and went on to earn a PhD from the University of Oxford. My first professional role was as an embryologist at the Hong Kong Sanatorium Hospital, where I worked for several years.
Despite my success in the scientific field, I felt a growing desire to explore opportunities beyond the lab. “The MBA came to mind because I was so specialised in science and I didn’t have any background in business or how business operated.” This realisation led me to HKU’s MBA programme, which I saw as a gateway to a broader understanding of the corporate world.
The MBA Decision
Choosing HKU for my MBA was a decision influenced by several factors. Firstly, I was looking for a programme that was well-rounded and not overly focused on one certain area such as technology. “HKU’s programme felt very comprehensive as it covered the basics of business, which was essential for someone like me who had limited prior experience in finance, marketing, or accounting.”
Another significant factor was the flexibility of the part-time programme. “Given my work schedule at the hospital, I needed a programme that could accommodate my weekends and evenings”. The part-time weekday mode option allowed me to balance my professional responsibilities while pursuing my studies, making it a practical choice.
From an Oxford-educated Embryologist to Driving Innovation & Technology for Hong Kong
Entering the MBA programme was a revelation for me. “It was a brand-new world opening”. The programme not only confirmed my inclination to move away from the lab but also equipped me with the language and skills needed to navigate the business landscape.
MBA has enabled me to achieve several significant milestones in my career. During my MBA, I transitioned to a role at AstraZeneca, where I worked in the medical department focusing on lung cancer. This experience allowed me to apply my MBA learnings in a real-world setting, bridging the gap between technical expertise and business acumen. I was involved in strategic planning and market analysis for lung cancer treatments.
Currently, as a manager at the Hong Kong Science Park, I look after a variety of medical and diagnostic start-ups, facilitating partnerships and investments. My role involves vetting companies, understanding their technology, and helping them navigate the complex landscape of funding and commercial partnerships. The case studies during the MBA courses have allowed me to be comfortable talking about not only the technical side but also everything from a business perspective.
“Now being able to confidently speak with clients about their financials, have a discussion with my investment team about the various fundraising rounds for these different startups, I think that was one main goal I have achieved out of the MBA.”
Reflections on the MBA Studies
I fondly recall the diverse courses and the practical skills I gained during my MBA. Two courses stand out in my memory: Business Ethics course and Advanced Negotiation.
The ethics course was one of my favourites, as it prompted deep introspection about my career goals and personal values. “Being in medical science, I was familiar with ethics related to human rights and healthcare, but this course focused on personal development and self-reflection”.
Another one was the advanced negotiation course, which provided invaluable skills in negotiation tactics and strategies. “It was very practical and a lot of fun, with different case studies and scenarios that helped us apply what we learned in real-world contexts.”
Advice for Future MBA Candidates
For those considering an MBA, especially those from non-business backgrounds, I offer encouraging words:
“Even if you don’t have a business background, you have skills in other ways that are very handy.”
“When you are in the MBA, you have the motivation to do more.” I emphasise the importance of being open to learning and engaging with classmates, as well as taking full advantage of the unique opportunities the MBA programme offers.
Conclusion
Belinda’s story is an example of how the HKU MBA programme can help individuals from diverse backgrounds achieve their career aspirations and make significant contributions to their fields. Her journey from the lab to the corporate world underscores the value of continuous learning and the courage to embrace new challenges.
