Student Story

Choosing the HKU MBA programme was a crucial decision in pursuing a career in investment banking in the financial center, Hong Kong. I had previously worked at China Securities, KPMG, McKinsey, and IDG Capital, and I hold American Certified Public Accountant (AICPA), Australia CPA, and Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountant (HKICPA) qualifications. With my strong career aspirations in Investment Banking Division (IBD), I wanted to concentrate on my studies and activities.

As part of my MBA, I took modeling and financial analysis classes to advance my technical capabilities. With excellent classwork and outstanding professors’ guidance, I was able to build my solid financial knowledge.

Working closely with the Career Development and Training (CDT) team, I was fortunately given the chance to interview with multiple companies in the IBD field. Thanks to the team, I was given affluent career advice, mentoring, and a 4-hour session mock-interview with professional coaches.

I found the networking opportunities with part-time students extremely useful, specifically through the elective classes I took. For instance, one of the part-time students that I met was an HR manager at Fosun Hani Securities who was kind enough to open the door to career opportunities within the firm. Through multiple interview steps, which included a valuation and modeling test and an interview with the Group CEO, I received an offer from the Investment Banking Division at Fosun Hani Securities. I feel extremely fortunate to have been able to take advantage of this opportunity, and am thankful for everyone’s help and support.

For those who wish to enter a career in – or further their careers in – IBD, I highly recommend working closely with the CDT team throughout your MBA, who will no doubt provide you with many career opportunities. I found the MBA integral in developing a strong technical skillset in valuation, modeling, and financial analysis. Lastly, try networking with people around the school and get connected. It can turn out to be a great asset to your career.
