Professor Poon, Honorary Professor of Practice at the University of Hong Kong, is a seasoned and accomplished Silicon Valley entrepreneur and a thought leader in fintech, venture capital, and Web3 innovation. Holding three master’s degrees from Caltech, Stanford, and Chicago Booth, he brings a rare blend of technical depth, financial acumen, and strategic foresight. His career spans senior leadership roles in corporate finance, infrastructure investment, and technical services in the Asia-Pacific region. As an early team member in several tech-oriented startups—including one that achieved NASDAQ listing—he has consistently driven innovation from concept to scale.
His applied research is both rigorous and forward-looking, covering entrepreneurial finance and emerging technologies such as AI, blockchain, and decentralized finance (DeFi). Together with his students, he has analyzed over 60 publicly listed tech giants including Alibaba, Xiaomi, Coinbase, and Reddit. His Web3 research delves into stablecoins, CBDCs, decentralized exchanges, lending protocols, perpetual futures, mixers, crypto AML/KYT/KYA, and real-world asset tokenization.
Professor Poon plays a strategic role in shaping Hong Kong’s digital policy. He is a non-official member of the Government’s Web3 Development Task Force, contributing to both infrastructure and regulatory committees. He chairs the Committee on Digital Economy and Information Technology at the Hong Kong Consumer Council and serves on two other committees. As a non-executive director of the eMPF Platform Company, he advises on audit and technical operation governance. He also supports the Hong Kong Police as a member of the Cyber Crime Advisory Group and expert in multiple cryptocurrency-related investigations. His leadership seamlessly integrates commercial innovation, academic excellence, and public service.
